The Only Plane in the Sky by Garrett M. Graff
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Y'all. Y'ALL. **THIS BOOK.** 😭
I cannot recommend this book enough. The audiobook was amazing. A.ma.zing! It is intense and heartbreaking and heartwrenching and even heartwarming. ❤💔
I had the print book that I tried to start, but moved on the the audio and all I can say is that I was literally walking around my house crying, driving in my car crying, lying in bed crying... That may sound like it is a depressing book that should not be read. Yes- it is sad. But I think it is SO very important to hear. I learned so much.
So many little glimpses into the thoughts and actions of survivors of that horrible day: The story of a man literally giving his shirt off his back to a woman in need... The countless boats providing transport from the island to safety- larger than the evacuation from Dunkirk in WWII... President Bush on Airforce One being overruled when he demanded to go back to Washington DC... The nurses and doctors readying the hospital for scores of injured survivors- survivors that did not exist... Military pilots ready to sacrifice their lives to take down the hijackers on United 93- but not having to because the heroes on board did it for them... Oh my heart
If you read any book about 9/11, please make it this one.
